Underfloor Air Distribution: A Smarter Approach to Flexible, Collision-Free Building Services
Modern commercial spaces are demanding more flexibility from their mechanical and structural systems. Underfloor Air Distribution (UFAD) offers a practical solution by using the space beneath a raised access floor to distribute conditioned air while also accommodating essential building services. When properly designed, UFAD works seamlessly alongside structural pedestals, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and data services, creating organized underfloor environment without unnecessary collisions or conflicts.
How UFAD Works
UFAD delivers conditioned air into the space through a network of supply ducts located beneath the raised floor. Air travels through the underfloor plenum before rising through strategically positioned floor diffusers. Unlike traditional overhead systems that distribute air from the ceiling, UFAD introduces air at floor level and allows it to naturally move upward through the occupied space. This approach can support improved ventilation effectiveness, occupant comfort and flexibility within the space. The raised floor system is supported by structural pedestals, creating the necessary plenum space below the finished floor. These pedestals provide the structural support for the floor panels while allowing services to be independently routed through the space.
Keeping Services Separate
One of the major advantages of combining raised access floors with UFAD is the ability to coordinate multiple building services within a shared underfloor environment. Supply air ductwork can be strategically positioned between structural pedestals, while electrical, plumbing, mechanical and data services can be routed through designated areas. With proper planning and coordination, each system has its own pathway, minimizing conflicts between ductwork, services and the structural floor system. This creates a cleaner installation and makes future modifications easier. As tenant layouts and technology requirements change, services can be accessed and adjusted without major disruption to the finished space.
Designed for Comfort and Flexibility
UFAD can also provide occupants with greater control over their immediate environment. Floor-level diffusers can be positioned throughout the workspace, allowing conditioned air to be introduced closer to where it is needed. The system's upward airflow also works with natural heat plumes created by occupants, lighting and equipment, helping move warmer air and airborne contaminants toward the ceiling.
